Manchester United transfer target Angel Di Maria is not in Real Madrid's squad for the Super Cup second leg against Atletico Madrid.

According to Spanish media outlet Cadena Cope, the Argentina international has been dropped by Carlo Ancelotti for the match against their city rivals. Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid played out a 1-1 draw in the first-leg.

United are now named as the main candidates to sign the £50m-rated midfielder this summer. Ancelotti told Di Maria that he was not in the team before the prematch meal today.

The Spanish report claims Di Maria's departure will be confirmed in the next few days.

PSG under FFP

United have jumped ahead of Paris Saint Germain in the battle to secure the services of the talented midfielder, as PSG contend with Financial Fair Play regulations handed down by UEFA.

Having signed David Luiz for €50m earlier this summer, they must now sell before they can buy again. That leaves the door open for United and Louis Van Gaal, who are looking to strengthen in the wake of their opening day 2-1 Premier League defeat to Swansea.

The £16m Marcos Rojo deal is just the beginning for United, at least that's what many of the club's fans will hope, as the Old Trafford club now seeks reinforcements in midfield.

As for Real Madrid, Ancelotti has earmarked James Rodriguez for the role previously occupied by Di Maria. The new recruit from Colombia will play as one of the three central midfielders, in a shuttle role that Di Maria made his own last season.

The arrival of Toni Kroos from Bayern Munich has only further pushed Di Maria down the pecking order, although Real Madrid can still expect to receive a sizeable fee for the former-Benfica star.
