Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck has told friends that he wants to join Tottenham this week - and the north London club are keen to sign the England international either on a permanent deal or on loan before the summer transfer window closes on September 1.
This is according to the Mirror, who claim that Welbeck will leave United if the Red Devils complete the club-record signing of Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria.
Van Gaal keen to offload Welbeck
The Premier League giants are reportedly on the brink of signing the Argentina international, whose arrival would limit Welbeck’s first-team opportunities at Old Trafford.
On Friday it was widely reported that United boss Louis van Gaal had told the versatile 23-year-old forward that he was free to leave Old Trafford, although the veteran Dutch coach refused to confirm or deny the story in his press conference ahead of today’s Premier League fixture against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Van Gaal is reluctant to sell Welbeck to any of the Premier League’s ‘top six’ clubs - Tottenham fall into that category - but the player has no desire to join a mid-table club such as Hull City or Sunderland.
Tottenham want Welbeck as new centre-forward
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino wants Welbeck to become his new central striker - aware of the fact that the Manchester United forward is desperate to play in that position - and hopes to wrap up a deal before the transfer window closes a week on Monday.
However, there’s still a chance that Spurs’ bitter north London rivals Arsenal could make a late move for the popular Old Trafford striker.
The Gunners have been strongly linked with the player, who now appears almost certain to leave the Red Devils.
