Kansas City Royals have gone from dark horse to potential contender

Who would have thought that Kansas City would have been a contender back in May? Or even June? I’ll wait… If you haven’t answered I don’t blame you; the Royals jumped out on everyone’s radar during the month of July and haven’t let up since.

They have taken over their division (The American League Central) for the moment, which includes heavy hitters like the Detroit Tigers and the upstart Chicago White Sox. But how is this Kansas team winning so consistently now and can it continue?

Well one could simply look at their pitching staff and start to see the answer reveal itself. Royals Ace James Shields is a deadly pitcher; young stud Yordano Ventura has been great this year, and their closer Greg Holland is as solid as you can get in Major League baseball.

Then we get to their offense; and while it may not jump off the page at you, it is solid. They have a constant threat in First Baseman Billy Butler; not to mention two very reliable defenders in Alex Gordon and Alcides Escobar along with a true veteran in Omar Infante.

As to the question of if they will be able to maintain the form that they are in right now, that remains to be seen. Kansas City’s offense isn’t exactly dynamite or a proven unit so eyes will be on them to see how they handle October baseball.

And while the consensus thought is that the Tigers will find a way to come back and make it to the playoffs, the Kansas City Royals have made sure that they put themselves in the conversation.
