Angel di Maria has been told the No.7 shirt has been reserved for him should he complete his move to Manchester United, reports The Daily Star.

Manchester United appear to be on the verge of agreeing a record deal for the Real Madrid winger. A bid in the region of £64 million has been launched towards the Bernabeu and a £200,000-a-week contract is on the table for Di Maria.

Iconic shirt

It appears that negotiations are at such an advanced stage that attention has now turned to the shirt Di Maria will wear once he joins. As part of the deal, Manchester United have agreed to award the iconic No.7 shirt to the Argentinian.

Di Maria will join an exclusive club of Manchester United legends who have worn the number in the past. The likes of David Beckham, Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo, George Best and Bryan Robson.

The symbolism surrounding the number is intense at Old Trafford. Antonio Valencia was pressured into giving up the number in 2013 after failing to perform well.

Record deal

Of course Di Maria is a fitting figure to take up the mantle. He is widely considered to be one of the finest wingers in world football and can be mentioned in the same breath as the shirt's previous owners.

If he does move to Old Trafford, he will also have the title of being the Premier League's and Manchester United's most expensive player ever. Fernando Torres is currently the most expensive having cost Chelsea £50 million in 2011 while Juan Mata became Manchester United's most expensive player in January.

Not wanted

Depiste his talent, Real Madrid have been trying to get rid of Di Maria ever since sealing a £63 million deal for James Rodriguez. They need to sell the 26-year-old to balance the books and look set to do so in the coming days.
