Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal is not on Manchester United’s transfer wish-list, it has emerged, with eight days left before the transfer window closes. Louis van Gaal has instead opted to sign Real Madrid’s Angel di Maria.
Vidal, the revered Chile international, has been constantly linked with a move to Old Trafford for the past two months. There were even reports last month that the 27-year-old central midfielder had undergone preliminary medical checks with the Premier League giants and that personal terms had been agreed.
Van Gaal opts for Di Maria
Van Gaal wanted to add a left-sided central midfielder to his ranks, according to Sunday Times journalist Jonathan Northcroft, and has given the green light for United to smash the British transfer record on Di Maria.
The Argentina international is expected to join the Red Devils this week in a deal worth £63.9 million, although Manchester City could make an audacious late move to lure the 26-year-old to the Etihad Stadium instead.
United fans upset?
United fans are pleased with the news that Di Maria is expected to become the club’s new number seven, but will be less impressed with Van Gaal’s decision to pull the plug on a potential deal to sign €50 million-rated Vidal, who is widely considered the world’s best all-action central midfielder.
Vidal would have significantly strengthened this current Manchester United side with his presence, power and all-round ability.
But Van Gaal, who has implemented a 3-5-2 system at Old Trafford, must now find a way to accommodate Di Maria into his system.
A change to Van Gaal’s favoured 4-3-3 formation looks possible. Di Maria flourished in a midfield three at the Bernabeu last season, despite playing his entire career up to that point on the left wing.
