Manchester United are confident of getting Angel di Maria cheaper than the £75million Real Madrid have demanded and were shocked after the original price they thought they had was bumped up by a large amount.
According to The Sun, the Old Trafford club are at the business end of talks with their counterparts at the Santiago Bernbeu over the Argentina international and expected to negotiate a reduction of the new price before the transfer window closes next week.
It claims that Louis van Gaal and the Manchester United moneymen were expecting to welcome Di Maria to the squad as they thought they had agreed a deal for him in the region of £55million, rising to £63million with various add-ons.
Last minute hike
However, it goes on to say that Real Madrid then hiked the price up to £75million in a last ditch attempt to get as much out of the deal as possible.
Rivals for signature?
One explanation for this could be the reported interest of Premier League rivals Manchester City last week, but the report says that the Etihad Stadium club were never in for Di Maria and were angry that they had been used as a bargaining tool by both sides.
Old Trafford officials are confident that the £75million price will be lowered because no other team is in for the talented winger, who has already said goodbye to his Los Blancos teammates and is heading to England to finalise personal terms.
