Michael Sam and Manziel meeting results in Twitter meltdown

The NFL’s first openly gay player, seventh round pick in the 2014 NFL draft Michael Sam, sacked America’s favorite rookie Jonny Manziel twice in Saturday’s matchup between the St. Louis Rams and the Cleveland Browns.

It isn’t astounding that a defensive lineman sacked an opposing quarterback, however what Sam did after the sack caused belly laughs and fist pumps across the United States.

Celebration

After Sam’s first sack he jumped up and used Jonny Football’s signature celebration “money.” While facing the Cleveland crowd Sam stood tall, raised his arms and rubbed his thumb across his middle and index fingers: money.

"If you're going to sack Johnny, you've got to do that once. He's a talented kid. He isn't called Johnny Football for nothing. It was fun getting to play against Manziel in an NFL game. I sacked him as both a junior and senior at Missouri," Michael Sam said in post-game interviews.

Despite the mockery, Manziel’s game was his best to date in the NFL. Manziel completed 10 of 18 pass attempts for 85 yards while running in a touchdown from seven yards out.

Manziel reaction

"The guy goes through a lot of stuff, so he gets heckled by everybody I'm sure, so he came up to me and said hello. It was a brief interaction. I thought he played pretty well," Jonny Football said in a postgame interview.

Michael Sam’s mockery was inspired by a Twitter post written a few hours before the game. @SquareKnight wrote; “Rams vs Browns tonight. If Michael Sam sacks Johnny Football & gives the money sign, drinks are on me. For everyone in the world. Forever.”

Twitter trolls

After Sam’s sack, @SquareKnight was inundated with demands of free alcohol from Twitter trolls, which lead @SquareKnight to post “Declaring bankruptcy in 3..2..1...” and “Today I messed up by promising mankind free booze for all eternity.”

To ease the obligation Michael Sam later wrote on Twitter “I heard there was a drink offer... In lieu of that @SquareKnight the Boys & Girls Club of Greater STL could use help!”
