Wenger has been on the lookout for a new centre-back since sanctioning the sale of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona, but will wait until the Gunners' Champions League fate is confirmed before making a formal offer for Reid.

Arsenal take on Besiktas in the second leg of their Champions League qualifier at home on Wednesday night, and with the tie tentatively poised at 0-0 their participation in Europe's elite club competition is by no means guaranteed.

Reid's arrival would help provide competition for current first-choice pairing Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, whilst also alleviating pressure on new arrival Calum Chambers, who has impressed so far in north London.
