Manchester United suffered a shock 4-0 defeat to a rampant Dons side, who operate two divisions lower than the 20-times top-flight champions, to immediately have their bubble burst following the acquisition of Angel di Maria.
The signing of Di Maria was announced in a club record £59.7 million deal less than an hour before kick-off in Milton Keynes, and the former Real Madrid midfielder would have been stunned to witness the capitulation of his new club.
Twitter naturally went into overdrive as goal after goal was plundered past David de Gea, with this demolition was the ultimate sporting schadenfruede for some. And, as ever during moments such as these, Frimpong was leading the charge.
“Might turn up at United tomorrow for trials,” the 22-year-old joked. At the time of writing, this sneering comment from Frimpong has received an impressive 28,000 RTs and over 12,000 favourites.
Frimpong is currently without a club having left Barnsley at the end of last season following the expiration of the short-term deal he had signed with the club after joining from Arsenal in the January transfer window.
But the Ghanian, who made only six first-team appearances for Arsenal during his time at the Emirates Stadium, may have to set his sights somewhat lower than Manchester United if he is to earn another contract.
Elsewhere, there was also some ridicule from a player of far greater repute than Frimpong, with Edin Dzeko of Manchester City also taking greater pleasure in witnessing his club’s neighbours take a pounding.
Dzeko was somewhat more succinct in his assessment, tweeting quite simply: “Hahahaha.”
Manchester United, meanwhile, will have an opportunity for redemption this weekend when they face newly-promoted Burnley at Turf Moor while still looking for a maiden competitive victory of the Van Gaal era.
Di Maria is expected to make his debut in this encounter, and Van Gaal will be hoping the Argentina international can help get United out of this rut the find themselves in with the season less than two weeks old.
