Chelsea's hopes of a late transfer window approach for Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa have been dealt a blow following reports the Spaniard wants to remain at the Bernabeu.

The 31-year-old has lost his place in the first-team to up-and-coming right-back Daniel Carvajal, but is determined to stay and fight for his place in Carlo Ancelotti's side.

Jose Mourinho - who enjoyed a strong relationship with Arbeloa during his time in the Spanish capital - has been credited with an interest in bringing the player to Stamford Bridge before the deadline on Sunday.

However, any hopes the Blues might've had of luring the player to west London have been dashed by the latest report in Spanish newspaper Marca that suggest the former Liverpool man's future remains in La Liga.

Arsenal were also mooted as surprise admirers of Arbeloa earlier this week and had reportedly held talks over a possible switch to the Emirates, but - like Chelsea - they'll have to turn their attention to alternative options.
