Manchester United's record signing Angel di Maria has confirmed that he spoke to Cristiano Ronaldo before completing his switch to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils has forked out just under £60 million for the 26-year-old, making him the most expensive player in Premier League history.
The Argentinian was officially unveiled as a Manchester United player today, and it was confirmed that he will wear the iconic number seven shirt previously worn by the likes of Eric Cantona and George Best.
Now with Di Maria the latest player to wear the iconic shirt, and now he's confirmed that he spoke to Ronaldo, who donned the shirt for Manchester United between 2003 and 2009.
“I was aware of the importance of the number seven shirt, Cristiano Ronaldo had spoken to me at Real Madrid and told me how important it was," he told reporters.
“I wanted to wear this shirt and do as much for the club as Ronaldo and the others could do. The club also wanted me to wear it so I want to live up to it.”
Di Maria, who is likely to make his debut against Burnley this weekend, is Manchester United's fourth signing of the summer, following in the footsteps of Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo. That quartet cost around £130 million - and their spending is unlikely to stop there.
Arturo Vidal and Daley Blind have been regularly linked with moves to Old Trafford - and boss Louis van Gaal has confirmed he expects the last few days of the window to be particularly busy.
"The club will [announce] when the time's there. Players will leave, others will come," he said today.
One player appears to have already left Manchester United is Wilfried Zaha. The winger who joined the Red devils for £15 million in 2012, appears to be on his way back to Crystal Palace. He tweeted a picture of him during his Palace days with the caption: "back!" - but has since deleted the message.
