Ever since Rusev made his main roster debut alongside Lana earlier this year; he has steamrolled his way through every single opponent that has dared to stop his reign of terror.
Many have tried to put a stop to The Brute including superstars such as Big E. and Jack Swagger but ultimately it is Rusev who is waving the Russian flag at the end of every match.
Rusev hasn’t been defeated in a clean singles match since he made his main roster debut, he has looked in trouble a number of times but he always manages to find a way to win, whether it’s forcing the opponent into submission through The Accolade or by leaving them unconscious in the middle of the ring.
Even though Rusev is still unbeaten, he should have been a much bigger star than he is right now, it is understandable due to circumstances which have had an effect on his anti-American gimmick, so the entire gimmick has been toned down a little.
There will obviously come a time where Rusev will be beaten, every ‘giant’ in the WWE ends up on the losing end sooner or later. We saw it with the late Umaga and more recently with Ryback on his way to the WWE Championship when he squashed one superstar after another.
For Rusev to remain a big threat in the WWE; he needs to lose to an opponent which will still allow Rusev to look very strong; it cannot be just any superstar who will probably fall down the ranks after such a big victory.
So, which superstars should have the chance to eventually put a stop to Rusev? Here are my top five picks.
I think the only thing that can save Ryback’s career as a singles star is a face turn, we have seen just how much the crowd was behind him when he debuted as Ryback on his way to almost becoming the WWE Champion; a feud with Rusev could trigger that reaction once more. The fans still get behind him during his tag team matches when he is about to hit the Meathook Clothesline and still plays the reactions down very well.
Ryback is now ‘taking time off’ from the WWE; with rumours that he is recovering from injury it’s unclear when Ryback could make his return to the WWE ring. Imagine the reaction when you hear the words ‘Feed Me More’ blast the PA system just as Rusev is furiously waving the Russian flag in the middle of the ring, Rusev’s gimmick means the fans are guaranteed to be behind Ryback if he interrupts Rusev and goes on to defeat him as the human wrecking ball we prefer him as.
4. Mark Henry
This is the current feud which looks to be going on, it is still a little confusing as Mark Henry and The Big Show are still involved with Erick Rowan and Luke Harper. Nevertheless a Mark Henry and Rusev feud makes perfect sense as Mark Henry isn’t just another name thrown into the mix, he has represented the United States of America in weightlifting and powerlifting so he is another patriotic American who would want to destroy Rusev.
Mark Henry is a legend in the business, on one hand it won’t make sense for a Mark Henry who is towards the end of his in-ring career defeating a Rusev who can dominate the company for years to come, whilst Rusev defeating Mark Henry will make Rusev look even stronger. When we saw Mark Henry confront Rusev, for the first time we saw Lana worried for Rusev, as she should be. A Mark Henry win makes Rusev looks strong, as it does really take the world’s strongest man to put a stop to Rusev.

Sheamus is in the same boat as Mark Henry, the only difference is Sheamus hasn’t had and still doesn’t have a good feud for the United States Championship, someone who will actually be a threat to his Championship, cue Rusev and Lana. You can already imagine the immense boos from the crowd if Rusev has the United States Championship hanging over his shoulder, the fans would hate him which is exactly what they need, nuclear heat.
Sheamus defeating Rusev simply means the United States Champion has put a stop to Rusev, but not an American himself. We know Sheamus is a strong superstar who isn’t easily beaten either so if Rusev is to lose to Sheamus he will still look strong.
2. John Cena
Love him or hate him, John Cena is a hard worker inside and outside of the WWE. Again, this can work both ways as a Rusev win over John Cena will seriously make the fans believe Rusev just cannot lose, defeating the face of the company, the number one star who just refuses to stay down, fans will begin to take Rusev even more seriously.
On the other hand, if Rusev is to lose to John Cena then again it shows that only a top main eventer, a powerhouse can defeat Rusev. This means a standard mid card superstar will never look to defeat Rusev but put up a valiant effort. Fans have called for Brock Lesnar to step up to the plate, but his schedule won’t allow Rusev and Lesnar to meet in the ring regardless of how many times it is teased online. John Cena defeating Rusev keeps Rusev strong, only an exclusive group of superstars would be able to defeat him.
1. Roman Reigns
Roman Reigns is perhaps the perfect and definitely the most popular choice on the list to put a stop to Rusev. If Roman Reigns and Rusev are to enter a full-time feud, it needs to happen before WrestleMania 31 so he can pick up a huge win over Rusev before going on to potentially becoming the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. A win over Rusev will allow Reigns to have another massive victory under his belt; something many superstars cannot boast.
For a feud to work, Reigns would need to improve on his microphone work. The reason a Swagger and Rusev feud worked was because of Zeb Colter being the voice of Jack Swagger and the American people, Reigns doesn’t have anyone in his corner to match up to Lana’s microphone work. A Rusev win over Reigns means Rusev would have to enter the title picture, that doesn’t look to be an option right now so if Rusev is ever to lose any time soon, I believe it will be Roman Reigns who defeats him.
