The majority of the WWE Universe wants Roman Reigns to challenge Brock Lesnar for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 31 in March next year, which takes place at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
It’s no secret that Roman Reigns is seen as the immediate successor to John Cena, where a WWE World Heavyweight Championship victory will mean Roman Reigns not only defeats the one in 21 and 1, but he becomes the face in the company, the main man; the one to carry the company on his shoulders.
It’s a big ask for Roman Reigns, as he still has his doubters about his microphone work and his limited move set, something the fans berate John Cena for.
The fans expect Roman Reigns to walk out of the Royal Rumble pay-per-view as the winner, and will get his main event match at WrestleMania 31 for the championship; and it Brock Lesnar is the name that comes up time and time again.
But what if the WWE are forcing Roman Reigns into our faces because the plan is something else? What if Roman Reigns isn’t going to face the WWE World Heavyweight Champion at WrestleMania 31?
There have been rumours that The Rock may even come back for a rematch with Brock Lesnar, where would that leave Roman Reigns?
The WWE do need to look at all the possibilities, not everything will be smooth sailing from now until WrestleMania and we already know just how often plans change in the WWE.
Here are what I believe are five possible match-ups for Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 31.
WWE World Heavyweight Championship: Brock Lesnar © vs. Roman Reigns
Let’s get the obvious out of the way, everyone is guessing this is the path the WWE will go down as WrestleMania 31 is expected to be built around Roman Reigns, just like WrestleMania XXX was built around Daniel Bryan. It can happen, the match makes perfect sense if the WWE are 100% confident about Roman Reigns leading the charge into the future, if there is even a little bit of doubt surrounding Reigns then they shouldn’t go through with it.
Reigns can have one special night, everyone knows that. But the WWE have to look at the months to follow, if he can keep up with the pressure, if he can adapt and so on. If he can’t and he defeats Lesnar then that hurts the legitimacy of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, it hurts Brock Lesnar as he won’t be seen as this indestructible monster, it will make John Cena look even weaker and the ending of the streak will mean nothing. If they do have confidence that he can pull it off, then perfect and they should go through with this long-rumoured plan of having Reigns become champion. Beating Lesnar won’t be a small feat, it will be a brutal match but one the fans will surely enjoy.

Daniel Bryan vs. Roman Reigns
There are plenty of massive names out there for Roman Reigns if he doesn’t get his champion match, one of those is Daniel Bryan who should be back in time for WrestleMania. Bryan is loved worldwide and so is Roman Reigns; placing two huge faces in front of 80,000 plus fans in a packed out Levi’s Stadium sounds like a pretty good substitute to me.
If this was to happen, I can see Daniel Bryan putting Roman Reigns over, it wouldn’t make sense the other way. Two superstars who could have great respect for each other putting on a good match if Bryan is 100% fit, the fans will be into it and it will still allow Roman Reigns to defeat a former WWE World Heavyweight Champion on a massive stage.
John Cena vs. Roman Reigns
This match will definitely happen one day, hopefully soon especially if the injury rumours surrounding John Cena are true. Another ‘passing of the torch’ in a sense, we saw it at WrestleMania X8 when Hollywood Hulk Hogan put The Rock over, and at WrestleMania 29 when The Rock put John Cena over for the WWE Championship. At WrestleMania this match would make perfect sense, if Cena’s career is winding down then handing over the torch for Roman Reigns to carry for the next ten years or so would be a fantastic sight.
The match itself wouldn’t be too bad, obviously they both have very limited move sets but for the spectacle itself it will probably be worth watching the present puts over the future in Reigns; a victory over John Cena under his belt at a WrestleMania is an achievement in itself, if The Miz has one then Roman Reigns definitely deserves one.
Bray Wyatt vs. Roman Reigns
Now this is a match between two future stars. They’ve already made huge impacts on the main roster and have yet to engage in a big feud, they did cross paths as The Wyatt Family and The Shield but it was very brief, it makes you wonder just how great that feud could have been between two incredible teams.
Bray Wyatt can go over as a brilliant heel as the fans do love Roman Reigns so much, Bray Wyatt is fantastic inside the ring so you wouldn’t have to worry about the match being bad because the build-up itself will be worth watching. I believe if Brock Lesnar is Reigns’ biggest physical test, then Bray Wyatt will be Roman Reigns biggest mental test, can he live up to this Superman figure the WWE see him as, or could Bray Wyatt expose him? By really getting under his skin and inside his head, the fans will be split between the middle as to who could pick up a potential victory.
Dean Ambrose vs. Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins
Why not save the best for last? Of course, at this stage it will be seen as a fantasy match for all Shield fans around the world, but it is something which needs to happen in the WWE. As of today this probably wouldn’t make much sense as Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns are still on good terms, but who knows what could happen from now until WrestleMania season?
There were rumours that the three were going to face off at WrestleMania XXX whilst still part of The Shield where Dean Ambrose’ United States Championship was going to be on the line, thankfully that wasn’t the case as a year later all three men can be in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship picture.
As much as I hope Seth Rollins cashes in on Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 31; I wouldn’t be too disappointed as a fan if Seth Rollins cashed in his briefcase earlier and walked into WrestleMania 31 as champion, against the winner of the Royal Rumble, Roman Reigns.
With Dean Ambrose, you could create a similar situation to Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania XXX, throw him into the mix rather than have a singles match because it’s probably something we wouldn’t see again, certainly not between three of the greatest talents in the WWE who were part of one of the most dominant stables in wrestling history. They’re in their prime, it will put fans in seats and it will be a fantastic spectacle to watch or even be a part of.
