Roma look set to make the race for Fernando Torres interesting, with reports suggesting that the Serie A outfit are plotting a last-ditch bid to sign the Chelsea striker.
Torres' future has been the subject of a lot of speculation in recent days, with the Spanish international heavily linked with an imminent move to AC Milan.
However, according to reports from Italian publication Tuttosport brought to our attention by talkSPORT, the Giallorossi are set to stage a late attempt to take him to the Stadio Olimpico prior to Monday night's transfer deadline.
In truth, the writing has been on the wall for Torres at Stamford Bridge for quite some time now.
While huge excitement and expectations accompanied his £50 million move from Liverpool in 2011, the 30-year-old has never come close to fulfilling his potential or replicating his previously stellar goalscoring form in West London.
Jose Mourinho had previously been adamant that Torres was set to remain at Chelsea, with the departures of Samuel Eto'o, Demba Ba and Romelu Lukaku leaving summer arrival - and returning Blues legend - Didier Drogba as the only senior alternative to £32m man Diego Costa.
However, the self-proclaimed Special One appears to have become more accepting of a possible departure for the ex-Atletico Madrid favourite of late, presumably as an acknowledgement that Torres needs to move on in an attempt to kickstart his spluttering career.
With Costa having sustained a muscular injury during a routine training session this week, Mourinho's decision to let £150,000-per-week Torres seek pastures new could depend almost solely on whether or not he can secure a replacement before the close of of the window.
Italian forward Mattia Destro has been the subject of sustained interest from Chelsea in recent weeks, although with Roma president James Pallotta resolving to keep hold of the player, any sort of swap deal would appear to be off the agenda at this stage.
Loic Remy could be a far more realistic option for Mourinho, with the French striker still expected by many to leave rivals Queens Park Rangers in the coming days despite having been offered a new contract to remain at Loftus Road.
Chelsea fans, what do you make of the situation regarding Torres? Should he be kept in order to provide support for Costa or has the time finally come for him to leave? Have your say in the comment box provided below.
