Arsenal are set to complete a deal for their fifth and final signing of the summer, but it will not be Radamel Falcao, according to football expert Guillem Balague.
Arsene Wenger is under pressure to find a replacement for Olivier Giroud, who is out until the new year with a broken tibia, but it appears the manager's priorities lie elsewhere.
Instead of finding a replacement for the stricken striker, Wenger is instead set to spend his remaining transfer budget on a central midfielder. Balague believes a deal is on the verge of being completed.
Speaking on Bleacher Report's official Twitter account, Balague said: "My understanding is Arsenal are set to sign a central midfielder. Likely their last signing of window."
Falcao not happening
Although refusing the speculate on who the player in question is, Balague did rule out the possibility of the Gunners making a move for Monaco striker Radamel Falcao before the close of the transfer window.
He reiterated: "Final word. Falcao DEFINITELY not going to Arsenal. Far too expensive, even on loan."
That statement followed a series of tweets that claimed that Falcao's agent is desperately trying to engineer a move to Real Madrid, Juventus or Arsenal in the final few days on the window. However, the £20 million needed to take Falcao on loan for the season is proving too rich for the Gunners.
Who is the midfielder?
Attention will now turn to the identity of the midfielder, who, according to Balague, looks set to become an Arsenal player this weekend. Wenger has chased central midfielders all summer with the likes of Sami Khedira and William Carvalho linked with a switch to the Emirates.
Khedira looks set to stay at Real Madrid, but Carvalho remains a firm option. Sporting Lisbon have reportedly informed Arsenal of their asking price, which sits at around £24 million.
As Carvalho can play at centre-back and defensive midfield, he would be a perfect addition for Wenger, who is looking for reinforcements in both areas.
However, the addition that seems most likely in Adrian Rabiot. The French teenager is available for around €15 million from PSG and Arsenal are believed to be in an advanced stage of talks.
Talented, cheap and French, Rabiot appears to be a classic Wenger signing. The only thing standing in his way is late interest from AS Roma, who reportedly matched PSG's asking price on Friday afternoon.
