Manchester United had the opportunity to sign Arturo Vidal earlier this summer - but now may have left it too late to seal a deal.
That's according to the Daily Express, who claim that Juventus were willing to sell Vidal to Manchester United last month. That would have given Juve plenty of time to sign a replacement.
But with just days to go until the transfer window slams shut, Juventus are unwilling to sell the Chilean international as they have no targets lined up to immediately fill what would be a gaping hole in their title-winning midfield.
United reportedly offered £34m plus Javier Hernandez to the Italian champions for Vidal, and believed they had done enough to convince the midfielder to join the club.
But Juve have pulled the plug on the deal with time running out to find a replacement. Vidal has since admitted that he's staying in Turin for this upcoming season and Juventus boss Massimo Allegri hopes he will commit his future to the club with a new long-term contract.
Di Maria capture
Had United made their move earlier in the window though, Van Gaal could be going into the match tomorrow with Vidal and new signing Angel Di Maria to choose from.
The Argentinean international, a £60m recruit from Real Madrid, is poised to make his debut for the 2013 Premier League champions against Burnley at Turf Moor.
Without a win in their opening three competitive matches of the season, United are in desperate need of some good news this weekend. They won't find it easy against the Clarets though, who are also looking for their first points of the campaign.
Manchester United transfer news
With hopes of landing Vidal fading, United reportedly turned their attention to Portugal international William Carvalho, although that deal also now looks dead in the water.
