Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has set his sights on midfield duo Nigel de Jong and Kevin Strootman after pulling out of the race to sign Arturo Vidal and William Carvalho, according to The Daily Star.
The Red Devils have been linked with a move for Juventus' Chilean star Vidal for some time now, but it appears that the club have ended their interest over the player's ongoing knee problems.
Carvalho, on the other hand, was reportedly wanted by ex-United manager David Moyes, but it now appears that the club won't look to being the Portuguese midfielder to Old Trafford before the close of the transfer window.
Manchester United do, however, appear to be interested in improving their midfield options before the close of the window. It's not really surprising that United are on the lookout, with a number of their players having struggled to find their best form over the course of the last year.
The likes of Marouane Fellaini, Tom Cleverley and Co. have all failed to impress, whilst Michael Carrick is currently out on the sidelines with a long term injury. The Red Devils have already purchased Spanish ace Ander Herrera, but are in need of a tough tackling midfielder.
The report has suggested that Van Gaal could look to land Milan star Nigel de Jong, who previously played for United's rivals Manchester City. De Jong certainly has the credentials to improve the club's midfield options as they go in search of success.
It appears that Van Gaal wants to bring the £8 million rated Dutchman to Old Trafford before the deadline, but it remains to be seen as to whether the club make a move for him in the near future.
Strootman, meanwhile, who has been rated at £28m, is currently out until December with an ongoing knee injury, so the Red Devils boss may have to wait for the winter market in order to bring the Roma man to Old Trafford. Manchester United fans will certainly be hoping the club land at least one midfielder in the coming days, with the club also in need of improvement in defence.
