Deportivo rescue late point against Rayo Vallecano

Deportivo rescued an important point in the dying minutes of their game with Rayo Vallecano thanks to an Issac Cuenca penalty after trailing 2-1.

José Rodríguez scored early for the hosts, but an Alberto Bueno double put them on the back foot until they were rescued in extra time by Cuenca.

The host were on top from the offset, and nearly grabbed a goal through striker Toché who we put clean through by Lopo’s through ball, but his chipped shot was saved by the fingertips of Cristian Alves.

The miss was of little importance as seconds later, Deportivo were in front. As Vallecano were attempting to clear the ball in the aftermath of Toché effort Abdoulaye Baye's short back pass presented the ball on a platter for José Rodriguez, who made no mistake and put his side ahead.

Bueno double

The match was a tempestuous affair, which saw ten yellow cards dished out between the two sides. This halted play on several occasions, but Vallecano were able to equalise before the break. Javier Aquino found himself in bounds of space, unchallenged on the right hand side, and the Mexican delivered a curing cross from deep which found the head of Alberto Bueno, who put the ball past Germán Lux.

Gael Kakuta and Manucho missed important second half chances, as Vallecano began to impose themselves on the game. But after 70 minutes, they finally got the lead their play deserved.

A carbon copy of the first goal, Aquino's cross from the right found Bueno, but the striker elected to swing a foot at the ball instead, as he beat Deportivo’s keeper to the ball.

Vallecano pressed until the final moments in their search for an equaliser, which looked unlikely until they were gifted another goal by Abdoulaye Ba. The defender blocked a goal bound effort from Medunjanin in the box in the 93rd minute.

Up stepped Isaac Cuenca, who recently joined the club from Barcelona, and despite the pressure, the winger looked cool and composed, as he sent goalkeeper Alves the wrong way and secure an important first La Liga point for his side.
