Manchester United have failed in a last ditch attempt to sign Arturo Vidal after Juventus knocked back a £30 million bid, reports The Daily Mail.
The report claims that Juventus received the offer for Vidal on Friday, but told Manchester United they would not accept it as they did not have time to find an adequate replacement.
It brought an end to the longest running transfer saga of the summer and will see Vidal remain at Juventus for the forthcoming season. Louis van Gaal responded to the failure by bidding for Daley Blind, who has since completed a move from Ajax.
Despite signing the Dutch international, losing out on Vidal would have come as a massive blow to Van Gaal, who had dropped the Chilean's name more than once since becoming Manchester United manager. It became increasingly obvious that Van Gaal saw Vidal as the man to add steel to the Old Trafford midfield.
The transfer window does not close until midnight on Monday evening, but to sign Vidal, Manchester United were told they would have to agree a deal by August 15. Juventus informed Old Trafford officials of their in-house deadline and were irked by their attempts to unsettle the player two weeks after that deadline expired.
It is a highly frustrating turn of events for Manchester United fans, who were lining up to get Vidal's name printed on the back of their shirts. However, the news that Manchester United moved too late for the 27-year-old will be muted by their success in chasing Radamel Falcao.
Manchester United have agreed to pay in excess of £20 million to take Falcao on loan for the season. That figure will cover both the player's huge £200,000-a-week wages as well as a loan fee to parent club Monaco.
Falcao will come in to cover for Robin van Persie, who could be set for an extended period on the sidelines with an injury to his left knee. Van Gaal was concerned his favourite striker would need surgery and moved quickly to secure Falcao.
A deal is believed to be agreed for the Colombian striker, but is subject to agreeing personal terms and completing a medical. Having just recovered from a serious knee injury, fans will be eagerly watching to see if Falcao passes the examinations.
