Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck is currently undergoing a medical at Arsenal's London Colney training ground and is trying to force through a £6m move before the transfer window slams shut at 11pm tonight, according to Sky Sports News.
Arsenal have finally decide to move for Welbeck with the England forward already at Gunners' training base on international duty, and the Daily Mail believe that he is desperate to seal a season-long switch this evening to a direct title rival.
Gunners officials have been keen to stress that the deal is far from completion, but it looks like Arsene Wenger has turned his search for cover in attack to the 23-year-old just when hope had faded of a last-ditch signing.
Answer to Arsenal's problems?
Welbeck has been forced to change stance over his future following Manchester United's blockbuster loan move for Radamel Falcao, with first-team opportunities severely limited by a quite daunting Red Devils strikeforce which also includes Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney.
The Three Lions forward is still looking to match raw potential with consistent Premier League displays on a weekly basis, but Wenger clearly thinks he's capable of doing just that at the Emirates this season.
Olivier Giroud's long-term injury has forced Wenger to consider adding another striker to his ranks, although there are huge question marks surrounding Welbeck's ability to help fill that void when you consider he's never found double figures in a Premier League season.
Deal still not close to completion
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is in Rome tonight managing a team in the Match for Peace, a charity match organised by Javier Zanetti and Pope Francis.
Regardless Arsenal are still actively pursuing the Welbeck deal and have not given up of signing both a centre-forward and centre-back before the deadline passes tonight.
