Michael Sam has been invited by the World Wrestling Entertainment company to come onto one of their Monday Night Raw shows and give his side of the story of trying to become the National Football League's first openly gay.
Depsite being the SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Sam has not been able to land himself a professional contract with the Saint Louis Rams side who drafted him, nor have any of the other 31 NFL teams decided to pick him up on the waiver wire or just to put him on their practice squad.
Sam's Open Mic Invite
Because of this, and because the WWE will be going up against the first Monday Night Football of the 2014 NFL season - which will take away a chunk of the TV audience - Vince McMahon and co. have invited Sam and promised to give him an open mic.
I would say that there is a 99.9% chance that the former Missouri defensive end will take them up on this offer.
But one WWE star is pretty annoyed at what has been offered to Sam. Wrestler Darren Young went on a rather passive agressive re-tweeting spree last night, when it became apparent of the invitation to Sam.
The reason? Young is openly gay himself and it has never been mentioned by the company.
The injured superstar re-tweeted the following comments from fans during last night's RAW in regards to WWE inviting Michael Sam, the first openly gay NFL draftee, to next week's show.
"So @WWE will allow this Michael Sam guy to have an open mic but not their own @DarrenYoungWWE?"
"Ironic that @WWE is worrying about @MichaelSamNFL even tho @DarrenYoungWWE came out, works for them and they never mentioned it at all. #smh"
Young came out last year during SummerSlam week in an off the cuff interview with a TMZ reporter. Also, WWE Hall of Famer Pat Patterson recently revealed he was gay for the first time publicly on the WWE Network show “Legends House,” after staying quiet for 50 years.
Does Young have a right to be annoyed by all this? Or should he just see it for the tame publicity stunt it is? Tell us what you think in the comments below...
