Arsenal offered forward Joel Campbell on loan to Sporting Lisbon in an attempt to bring midfield ace William Carvalho to the Emirates on transfer deadline day.
This has been reported by the Express, who have suggested that Campbell was interested in a move to Portugal in order to gain first-team football.
Interest in Carvalho
It's been suggested that the Gunners offered as much as £12.5 million and the young forward for Carvalho's services, but it appears that Sporting rejected the deal.
Arsenal, who were able to complete the transfer of Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck on deadline day, were seemingly in need of a new midfield addition, with the club having been linked with a swoop for Carvalho throughout the summer.
But now, with the transfer window now closed, Arsene Wenger will have to make do with the players he has at his disposal. The Gunners boss still has the likes of Mathieu Flamini, Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta and Co. to choose from during this season.
It remains to be seen, however, as to whether Wenger reignites his interest in Carvalho once again in January or next summer.
Competition for Campbell
Campbell, meanwhile, will be hoping for more opportunities in the Arsenal first team after a difficult start to the season. Despite the injury to Frenchman Olivier Giroud, Campbell has seen his chances limited at the Emirates following his return to the club this summer.
And now, with Welbeck in north London, Campbell will have to battle the England international and Yaya Sanogo for a place in the first team. It doesn't get any easier for the versatile Campbell, who can also play behind the striker and on the wing, as he will have to challenge the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Co. for a first team place in those particular positions.
Arsenal fans will certainly be hoping that the youngster is handed some game time this term, with the club looking to challenge for silverware on four fronts. Campbell, though, must prove his credentials to Wenger when he's handed opportunities over the coming weeks and months.
