Despite being cut by the Saint Louis Rams on Sunday and completely clearing the waiver wire, Michael Sam could still become the first openly gay player in the history of the National Football League.
According to reports from NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, it is the Dallas Cowboys that are looking to bring in the former Missouri standout.
"Source: #Cowboys are doing research and due diligence into the plan of signing DE Michael Sam to their practice squad."
"#Cowboys spent today calling players, gauging reaction to signing Michael Sam. They’ll have him in with the plan to sign him to P-squad"
"Michael Sam flies in to Dallas tonight, source says. He’ll take a physical. If he passes, he will join their practice squad."
Jerry Jones is all about the shirt sales, so seeing as he wasn't allowed to draft Johnny Manziel by his son - who literally took Johnny Football's draft card away from him - so now he has moved his attention to the only other NFL rookie with the same kind of merchandise power.
The Cowboys are weak at the defensive line and carried 10 lineman on their 53 man roster. They struggled with injuries there and Sam could be called up if need be, or they could bring him in to take a longer look at him and hold on to him till next season potentially. Even today they added defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence to the Injured Reserve list.
Sam racked up 2.5 sacks this preseason and led the Rams with six tackles in Thursday night's preseason loss to the Miami Dolphins. The Rams depth at the position however meant that it would always be a struggle for him to make the roster.
