Spanish defender,Cesar Azpilicueta has signed a new five-year contract for Chelsea, reports BBC Sport.

The talented defender joined the Blues in 2012 from French club Marseille for a fee of £6.5million, and enjoyed a fine season in the 2013/14 campaign.

More accolades to follow

Azpilicueta won the Players’ Player of the Year last season when Chelsea conceded only 27 goals in 38 league games.

A natural right-back, Azpilicueta was assigned the role of a left-back since Jose Mourinho took over at Stamford Bridge, and has since become a first-team regular in that position.

Favourite of Mourinho

Azpilicueta is an indispensable part of Chelsea and is highly rated by Mourinho. Jose was quoted last year saying,"Azpilicueta is the kind of player I like a lot.I think a team with 11 Azpilicueta's would probably win the Champions League.”

The 25-year-old is nearing his 100 appearances in a Chelsea shirt and apart from defending, has scored one goal for the Premier league giants against Arsenal in the League Cup tie on 29th October 2013 with Chelsea winning 2-0.

He has featured in every minute of the 2014-15 season with Chelsea securing top spot in the league table with nine points in three outings.

Azpilicueta made the 23-member squad for Spain for the World Cup in Brazil, but it ended on a disastrous note with the world champions of 2010 bowing out of the tournament from the group stages.

Ideal defender

With Passing, crossing, tackling being his key strengths, Azpilicueta is an asset to the Chelsea roster. Azpilicueta is now on international duty with the Spanish national team ahead of their friendly against France and European qualifier against Macedonia.
