Arsenal decided to keep forward Joel Campbell at the club 'in the last hour', according to the player's agent.
This has been reported by the Daily Star, who have suggested that the 22-year-old was the subject of a deadline day bid from Portuguese outfit Benfica.
Change of mind
It's a surprise that Wenger didn't allow the youngster to leave the club in this past summer's transfer window. Campbell has struggled for opportunities in north London so far this term, with the likes of Yaya Sanogo and Alexis Sanchez ahead of him in the pecking order.
And now, with former Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck at Arsenal, Campbell may find first team football even harder to come by.
Speaking to O Jogo, Campbell's agent Joaquim Batica said: "Benfica fought until the last minute to sign Campbell but the move didn't happen because, in the last hour, Arsenal decided to keep him.
"Wenger says he did not want to sell him. But if he is not in his plans, then why not allow him to leave?"
Campbell, then, will have to work hard to prove his worth to Wenger over the coming months. He will certainly be hoping to at least play a part from the bench throughout the course of the season, especially with Frenchman Olivier Giroud on the sidelines.
It's expected, however, that England international Welbeck will become the club's No.1 centre-forward in the immediate future. Gunners fans will also be hoping that the return of Theo Walcott helps the club's fire power as they go in search of glory on four fronts.
After an indifferent start to the Premier League season, the Gunners have a few tricky games coming up in the next month. In their next four Premier League fixtures, Wenger's side will battle the likes of Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea.
The Gunners will also continue their European adventure in the coming weeks as they travel to Germany to take on Borussia Dortmund on September 16 in the group stages of the competition.
As the games arrive thick and fast, Campbell will be hoping to be utilised on a regular basis by Wenger, but will he get his chance? Arsenal fans: Does Campbell deserve an opportunity to prove himself this season? Have your say below!
