Manchester United spent lavishly to ensure that they have the best possible chance of righting the wrongs of last season this summer, with Louis van Gaal enticing a number of high-profile players to Old Trafford.

Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Angel di Maria, Radamel Falcao and Daley Blind all pledged their futures to United for at least the forthcoming season, with over £146 million leaving the club's coffers to sate the fans' appetite for improvement.

And yet whilst United have now assembled a small galaxy of stars they remain an unfinished team, and a number of players that Van Gaal would have been able to field had he been able to wave a magic wand remain out of his grasp.

Now that the window has slammed shut and the business is done and dusted until at least January, it's high time we look at some of the players that Van Gaal could, and perhaps should, have pressed harder to sign. After all, Radamel Falcao carries a glittering reputation, but he's not going to solve all of their problems.
