5: Nigel de Jong

With the attacking options at Louis van Gaal’s command having been scrutinised, and then amended, to death, only his defensive issues are likely to be giving him sleepless nights.

In short Manchester United are bereft of any natural leader when opposition teams are on the front foot, and a midfield anchor would have been the perfect remedy to this particular ailment. Daley Blind was signed, and he’s a good option for the future, but it’s anyone’s guess as to whether or not he’ll be able to do the job in the middle of the park effectively in the Premier League, and a proven performer would have been a better option.

Enter Nigel de Jong, the combative midfielder who made his name in England acting as a wrecking ball for Manchester City. It would have been a controversial move for Van Gaal to target him, but one which would have eventually paid dividends.

With some much emphasis now on the attacking assets at Old Trafford the ship needs a world-class anchor to help when things aren’t going to plan. De Jong would have been a better option than anything United currently have.
