2: Arturo Vidal
Another European star who Louis van Gaal monitored carefully with a view to snatching before the culmination of the summer transfer window, Arturo Vidal’s position at Juventus looked precarious right up until the instant when transfers physically could no longer be pushed through.
The Chile international is a world-class asset both defensively and moving forward, and as such it’s a crying shame Van Gaal wasn’t able to successfully negotiate with his owners in Turin.
Of course Juve were never going to want to play ball regarding the transfer, but if an offer had been lodged similar to the one which landed Angel di Maria (Vidal’s valued at €50 million), they would have been forced to consider it.
Vidal may not be better than Di Maria in terms of quality, but it could be argued that he’s more suited to what the United squad needs at this moment in time.
