Cristiano Ronaldo may just have sparked immense excitement among Manchester United fans, by confirming that he wishes to return to the city in the future and by leaving himself open to the possibility of a sensational Old Trafford comeback.

Portuguese international Ronaldo originally joined the Red Devils from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 and went onto become one of the very best players on the planet during a subsequent six-year spell in the Premier League.

He eventually left Manchester United for Real Madrid four years ago, of course, and Ronaldo has since further enhanced his reputation with a truly incredible run of form at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Uncertain future?

Despite enjoying a status - along with great rival Lionel Messi - as one of the sport's true greats, there has been a certain amount of speculation concerning his future recently, with the 29-year-old seemingly disagreeing with Real's recent decision to allow former teammates Xabi Alonso and Angel di Maria to join Bayern Munich and Manchester United respectively.

And while he has not gone on record to officially state for sure that he will be leaving La Liga soon, Ronaldo's recent words will have given a lot of encouragement to those who long to see him back in the famous red shirt.

Manchester wish

"I love Manchester," he said in an interview that was brought to our attention by The Daily Express.

"Everyone knows that — I have said it many times. Manchester is in my heart. I left many good friends there, the supporters are amazing and I wish I can come back one day."

With the player only having signed a new lucrative five-year deal with Real Madrid last September, it seems unlikely that a return to the top-flight of English football will happen in the next few years.

However, Ronaldo - who evidently still harbours a great amount of respect for a certain Sir Alex Ferguson, judging by their hearty embrace at last month's UEFA Super Cup clash in Cardiff - certainly did not rule out the possibility of becoming a Manchester United employee once again, praising the treatment he received during his time at the club and also stating his belief that they will return to the top after last year's turgid campaign and a difficult start to 2014/15 under Louis van Gaal.

Comeback a possibility?

"I am happy here in Real Madrid and have four more years, but in the future you never know because they treated me unbelievably there," he added.

"I really did love being at Manchester United. Believe me, they will be a good team again, I'm sure of it. It is a great club," he added.
