Ronaldinho to Basingstoke and four other fantasy football signings (1)

Conference South side Basingstoke Town hit the headlines this week when reports emerged that they had approached the agent of former World Cup winner Ronaldinho about the prospect of turning out at The Camrose this season.

The non-league club - who currently play in the sixth tier of English football - made the audacious bid to sign the 34-year-old Brazilian after learning he was a free agent following his recent departure from Atletico Mineiro back in his homeland.

Ronaldinho, who previously played for illustrious sides such as Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and AC Milan is yet to respond to the request, but would represent a major transfer coup for the Hampshire-based outfit.

The 2005 FIFA Ballon d'Or award winner's prospective arrival at Basingstoke evokes memories of a number of other fantasy football rumours and signings from the sublime to the ridiculous in years gone by.
