The agent of new Manchester United star Angel di Maria has revealed that his client never wanted to make a move to Old Trafford this summer, according to the Daily Mirror.
Eugenio Lopez, who played a part in organising the Argentina international’s £59.7 million switch to United, has said that the player would have remained at Real Madrid for less money than he accepted as part of the contract from Louis van Gaal.
Di Maria’s deal with United sees him taking home around an eye watering €8 million-a-year, but if Lopez is to be believed then he would have been happy to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu for a significantly lower figure.
Di Maria to United
Much has been made of Di Maria’s surprise move to United before transfer deadline day, and it’s the type of high-profile transfer that’s accumulated the opinions of virtually everyone in the football world. The general consensus at Madrid is thought to be a negative one, with star names such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos said to be against the sale.
However it’s thought that president Florentino Perez was firm on his stance that Di Maria would be leaving the club and, although he entertained contract talks with the winger, refused to budge on his salary demands.
“"Di Maria went to Manchester United asking for €8million net. He would have stayed in Madrid for a lot less," Lopez told sources in Spain.
"Angel wanted to stay. The difference [in the contract negotiations] was €1million a year. Madrid began talks but would not budge."
