Manchester United may sell Juan Mata to Juventus in order to pave the way for midfielder Arturo Vidal to head in the opposite direction, according to the Daily Star.
Mata only arrived at Old Trafford in January for a then record fee of £37.1 million - however reports now suggest he could be on his way out of the club.
The arrival of some big-names including Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao could mean that he is forced out of the Manchester United first team, and rather than relegate him to the bench boss Louis van Gaal could be willing to sell up in order to land one of his top targets of the summer.
The Daily Star claim that the former Chelsea playmaker - scorer of one of Manchester United's two Premier League goals this season - is being targeted by Juventus and could make the switch to Italy in January, even though he is reportedly keen on proving his worth at Old Trafford rather than jumping ship at the first sign of trouble.
The paper adds that when negotiations start, Vidal's name could be thrown into the mix. Manchester United were heavily linked with the Chilean over the summer but couldn't get the deal done amidst reports that they were concerned about his history of knee trouble.
That may no longer be an issue if he has three months until the January window that the injury which meant he wasn't at 100% for the World Cup isn't bothering him - although he appeared to aggravate his knee injury while on duty this week having been forced to pull out of a training session. He denies there is a problem.
Although the summer transfer window only recently just closed there has been plenty of suggestions that Manchester United will be busy in the winter window already. Roma's Kevin Strootman is said to be a target for Van Gaal, although if talks with Juventus over Mata go well then Vidal may preferred over the Dutchman.
