Real Madrid’s summer approach to sign Ramires from Chelsea was rejected by Blues boss Jose Mourinho.
According to Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, Real Madrid enquired about the availability of the £20m-rated Brazilian midfielder over the summer transfer window, but were meet with a firm ‘no.’
Chelsea boss Mourinho has successfully managed to build his ideal squad at Stamford Bridge, bringing in Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa from La Liga.
Ramires at Chelsea
But Real Madrid wanted to sign Ramires, who has been relegated to useful squad player status at Chelsea following a summer of transfer activity, as cover for their central midfield.
Having sold Xabi Alonso to Bayern Munich and brought in Toni Kroos, Real Madrid wanted extra cover in the central area as Sami Khedira continued his recovery from a long-term knee injury.
That forward planning was the right idea, but the failure to clinch a deal could cost Real Madrid now after Khedira was recently ruled out for another six weeks with a torn thigh muscle.
Chelsea transfer round-up
As well as the Chelsea midfielder, Carlo Ancelotti was keen to sign Paris Saint Germain’s Italian midfielder Marco Verratti and Inter Milan’s Fredy Guarin.
Verratti has been a target for Real Madrid ever since he left Italy for Paris, while Guarin, a Colombian international, was heavily linked with Manchester United before the Old Trafford club signed Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao.
