Manchester United have confirmed that Italian midfielder Davide Petrucci has joined Romanian outfit CFR Cluj after his contract at Old Trafford was terminated by mutual consent.
A statement released via Man United's official Twitter account reads: "Buona fortuna to Italian midfielder Davide Petrucci as he leaves #mufc by mutual consent. He's joining CFR Cluj in Romania as a free agent."
Petrucci failed to convince United coaches
The 22-year-old, who joined the Red Devils aged 17 in 2008, struggled to force his way into United's first team during his six-year spell with the Premier League giants - and leaves Old Trafford having failed to have made a single first-team appearance for the club.
Petrucci was a regular in Manchester United's reserve side, but failed to convince coaches that he was ready - or even good enough - for first-team action.
He was loaned to Peterborough United in 2013, spent time on loan at Royal Antwerp in the same year and was sent to Charlton Athletic a year later.
Petrucci named in United's 25-man squad
Petrucci, a former Italy Under-19 international, was named in Manchester United's 25-man Premier League squad last week but was never likely to appear in Louis van Gaal's team this season.
Subsequently, the midfielder has opted to join 2011-12 Romanian champions Cluj on an initial one-year deal.
Petrucci hit the headlines last week for revealing that his United teammate Guillermo Varela had secured a move to Real Madrid Castilla - a deal that was confirmed by the Red Devils a day later.
Now Petrucci has followed Varela out of the Old Trafford exit door to Cluj, who went head-to-head with Manchester United in the Champions League during the 2012-13 campaign.
The Romanian outfit were beaten 2-1 by United back in October 2012, but recorded a famous 1-0 victory at Old Trafford two months later.
Sir Alex Ferguson, the United boss at the time, deployed a youthful team - not including Petrucci - and saw his side humiliated on home turf by the Champions League minnows.
Petrucci handed No. 4 shirt
Petrucci, who has been handed the No. 4 shirt by Cluj, will hope to help guide his new employers to another league title - and, in turn, another outing in Europe's premier club competition.
He becomes the 21st player to leave Manchester United - either on loan, or on a permanent deal - this summer.
Van Gaal has wasted no time in reshaping his squad, finding new permanent homes for the likes of Danny Welbeck, Shinji Kagawa, Alexander Buttner and Bebe.
The veteran Dutch coach has also offloaded a host of first-team stars on loan deals, including Javier Hernandez, Tom Cleverley and Nani.
