Tom Brady and New England Patriots suffered a devastating 33-20 loss on Sunday that derailed their attempts to make a good start to the NFL season.
On the road in Miami, Brady and his potent team were left stumped by the Dolphins. Brady only just managed to complete half of his pass attempts, with an ugly looking completion rate of 29 from 56 attempts.
One solitary touchdown to Rob Gronkowski was not enough to lift spirits as the Patriots crumbled to a second-half onslaught from the Dolphins.
Brady pissed off
All in all it was a terrible opening day for Bill Belichick's men, and Brady had some honest and interesting comments post-game, while he revealed a change of heart with his appearance.
"Well, the beard is gone," Brady told ESPN.com. "I was pretty pissed off this morning."
Brady admitted that the beard simply wasn't working. But of course, the problems for Brady were much deeper and worrying than that. On offense, the Patriots failed to even manage 100 yards in the second half, and the three-time Super Bowl winner had strong words post-game.
"We have to find ways to not get into those long-yardage situations where we become one-dimensional," Brady said. "Because when you become one-dimensional against a good pass rush, that’s how they win a lot of games. Just not the way we needed to play that game."
The Patriots defensive holes were there for all to see. Former Denver Broncos running-back Knowshon Moreno had a field day. Running for 134 yards on the ground, Moreno also managed to pick up a touchdown.
It was the beginning of a new era for New England, with them employing a new look 3-4 defense which frankly looked a shambles.
And veteran defensive tackle Vincent Wilfolk was the most critical of his defense's performance in Miami.
"Everything they did we knew," he told Boston.com. "They didn't trick us. We thought we had a good game plan for it and obviously we didn't."
