WWE: Explaining why there is a lack of mixed tag team matches

Published 1 Comments

Of all the Superstars and stipulations WWE matches can have, the mixed tag team set up is one which we see very rarely.

Often people brand mixed tag teams as less exciting and consisting of the less popular WWE Superstars. The days which saw Lita and Trish Stratus make up one half of a mixed tag team however, proved very differently.

Golden age of mixed tag team wrestling

Stratus could be seen teaming up with the likes of Bubba Ray Dudley, Tyson Tomko and even John Cena, to face lesser-known  wrestlers who were working their way up in WWE.

Lita could often have been seen partnering the likes of Matt Hardy and Edge, with the mixed tag team set up causing her to gain a number of fans due to her versatility as a wrestler.

Though clearly a mixed tag team match is intended for those of the same gender to face each other in the ring at one time, there has been an occasion where Lita has faced a male WWE Superstar.

Some years back Lita faced John Cena in a match which saw the latter have one hand tied behind his back in order to make the pair seem more level.

After an awkward and hesitant start by Lita, she proceeded to strike Cena before eventually having no answer when he was able to perform an Attitude Adjustment on her using just one arm.

Though matches like this have been discussed, given the rarity of them as well as the difference in ability the male and female WWE Superstars have, it is understandable that they are not a common occurrence on the roster.

A mixed tag team match however, can be an exciting event given the right Superstars and right occasion, if one is simply created as a filler on an episode of Monday Night Raw, Smackdown or even a pay-per-view event, then it is understandably not going to be the biggest match of the night.

Current roster

Considering the huge variety of current WWE Superstars however, it would be interesting to see some of the bigger names in the industry team up with WWE Divas to see who would come out on top.

Perhaps real-life couples could face one another such as Nikki Bella and John Cena against Stephanie McMahon and Triple H. Teams could even be created from particular parts of the world such as Wade Barrett and Paige making an English pairing.

Whoever would make up mixed tag teams could make an extremely interesting match at present, and the focus the likes of Trish Stratus, Lita, Edge and even Vince McMahon gave these types of matches could be recreated.
