Manchester United fans have taken to Twitter to urge Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to return to Old Trafford following recent speculation over his future at the Bernabeu.
The Red Devils have first option to buy the two-time Ballon d’Or winner, who has also been linked with a shock move to Chelsea in recent days, and are believed to be lining up a £60 million offer, according to the Daily Star.
The same report features a handful of tweets from Manchester United supporters who have been pining for the 29-year-old to return ever since he left for Real Madrid five years ago.
United fans plead with Ronaldo
One user wrote directly to Ronaldo’s official Twitter account, pleading: “Come back home, we still love you! We're not mad we just want you back home where you belong…”
Another wrote: “c'mon home Ronny @Cristiano see you next summer back where you belong!! #CR7”
And so on…
United to offer Ronaldo a pay rise
It was reported on Thursday that Manchester United will tempt Ronaldo to return to Old Trafford by offering him a pay rise.
The prolific attacking winger, who has scored a remarkable 255 goals in 250 matches for Los Blancos, currently earns an astronomical £290,000-a-week at the Bernabeu.
But United plan to offer him a monster £300,000-a-week contract to lure him back to the club where he established his reputation as a world-class footballer between 2003 and 2009.
Real Madrid open to selling?
It’s believed that Real Madrid might be more open to selling Ronaldo in January after the Portuguese star helped the club win their tenth European Cup last season.
He turns 30 in February - and the reigning European champions are acutely aware that Ronaldo’s value will only decrease over the coming seasons.
The star’s age does not appear to be a concern for Manchester United, though. The Red Devils know that shirt sales would sail sky high should the former number seven return to the club - although it’s unclear whether Angel di Maria, United’s club record signing and a former Real Madrid teammate of Ronaldo’s, would be prepared to give up his new jersey.
Is this a negotiating tactic?
Ronaldo has made no secret of the fact Manchester United still occupy a place in his heart - and a return to Old Trafford is looking increasingly likely.
However, there is concern amongst some United fans that this could merely be a tactic for Ronaldo to negotiate a more lucrative contract with Real Madrid, the club he was desperate to join in order to fulfil a lifelong dream in 2009.
Ronaldo is contracted to Real Madrid until 2018 after penning a new five-year deal 12 months ago - and it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that he will retire with the Spanish giants.
