Chelsea target Cristiano Ronaldo is keen on making a €75 million move to Manchester United next year - but the deal hinges on whether Louis van Gaal wants to sign the Portuguese ace according to the Daily Star.
Rumours have been rife in recent weeks that Ronaldo is eyeing the exit at the Bernabeu, while his agent Jorge Mendes reportedly wants to move him on having fallen out with Madrid president Florentino Perez over his reluctance to cough up the cash for Radamel Falcao.
Falcao and another of Mendes' clients, Angel Di Maria, both ended up at Manchester United this summer and Mendes reportedly wants to move another of his clients to Old Trafford.
According to the Daily Star, the move is well and truly on as Manchester Unites officials are keen to exploit his commercial value, but hinges on Van Gaal giving the green light. The Dutch boss splashed around £150 million over the summer and is expected to continue spending next year.
However the Star claim that he is reluctant to allocate such a large sum towards buying the 29-year-old when other areas of his squad need improving.
He will likely opt to target a new centre back and a new midfielder in the January window and then assess his options at the end of the season depending on how his team perform. That could well open the door for Chelsea who have been linked with a move for Ronaldo as well.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is said to be keen on linking up with his countryman once more.
There are also some doubts about the current world player of the year's fitness. He played a limited role for Portugal at the World Cup and has started the season at Madrid slowly.
Despite leaving Manchester United for record £80 million fee in 2009, Ronaldo has retained a place for the club in his heart, and recently spoke out about the possibility of a return to Manchester United, hinting that it could happen one day.
I love Manchester United," he said. "Everyone knows that — I have said it many times.
"Manchester is in my heart. I left many good friends there, the supporters are amazing and I wish I can come back one day."
However he is one year into a huge five year contract and Real Madrid are unlikely to let him go easily. Spanish sports journalist Guillem Balague tweeted yesterday that Ronaldo was indeed keen on a return to Manchester United, but as things stand Real Madrid are not willing to sell him next summer. That could all change though if Manchester United put their money where their mouth is.
It does appear as though the Red Devils are in the driving seat to land Ronaldo, with Chelsea seemingly stalling while PSG who have also been linked with him, no longer interested according to French journalist Sylvie de Macedo.
