Manchester United starlet Adnan Januzaj has been told to consider leaving Old Trafford by former Red Devils favourite Keith Gillespie.
The Belgian international burst onto the scene last season, announcing himself as one of the brightest young prospects in the Premier League with a string of eye catching performances.
He opened his scoring account for Manchester United against Sunderland last November with a stunning brace, and made a total of 27 league appearances for the club last season. Sadly however it looks as though his opportunities to shine this season will be limited thanks to a glut of big name arrivals at Old Trafford, including record buy Angel di Maria.
He's been a substitute in each of Manchester United's first four games of the season and is yet to find the back of the net - something which has prompted speculation over his future. He offered a timely reminder of his ability by bagging a hat-trick for the Manchester United U21 side yesterday.
Speaking exclusively to TalkSPORT, Gillespie - who spent two years with Manchester United before joining Newcastle, said that Januzaj may have to leave Old Trafford either on loan or permanently in order to develop as a footballer.
He said: "Yes [he may have to move]. Unfortunately, with the embarrassment of riches Manchester United have at the moment, he’s not first choice.
“He’s still young though and is learning the game. He needs games to bring out his potential. Last season was very poor for United, but he was probably the one shining light in a team which didn’t perform."
Manchester United spent more than £150 million in the summer transfer window, stockpiling talent that Gillespie believes may now get in the 19-year-old's way.
“Just look at the players in the team now, the likes of Angel di Maria, Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao," he continued.
“He’s a winger and I’m not sure he can adapt and play as a wing back. He needs to play further forward. It’s very difficult to fit him in to the system.”
The Red Devils secured their first win under new boss Louis van Gaal against QPR at Old Trafford on Saturday, taking them up to ninth in the Premier League with five points after four games.
Despite the fact that the summer transfer window only recently closed there is still plenty of speculation regarding their potential activity in January. Reports suggest that a move will be made for Kevin Strootman, while a move for Cristiano Ronaldo has been mooted, but is more likely in the summer than in January.
