A €14.5 million move to the city of Leverkusen was hurriedly swept beneath the hurrah of the more glamorous transfers of Angel Di Maria and Luis Suarez. It is the team from North Rhine-Westphalia, however, who may have manufactured the transfer of the summer.
In two short seasons Turkish-German phenomenon Hakan Calhanoglu has risen from the depths of 2. Bundesliga to Champions League football, establishing himself amongst the fine cohort of youth Leverkusen have managed to assemble in recent years.
Playmaker with so much more to offer
With one goal and two assists in just three Bundesliga appearances, Calhanoglu's set piece proficiency will be apparent to the casual football fan in due time, playing a key role behind the striker in one of the finer counter-attacking sides of Europe.
The tenacious playmaker is set to make Marco Reus-esque waves in the Bundesliga this season having impressed in every time he has suited up for Leverkusen, a side that happens to find itself atop the league table at time of writing, having dropped its first points in a 3-3 thriller against Werder Bremen last weekend.
No blame lies with the Turkish summer signing, however, who turned up with a masterclass display that saw him create three clear-cut goal-scoring chances and net a free kick, a skill that has become something of a habit of his.
The Bremen thriller was preceded by a playmaking showcase in which the man from Turkey created five clear goal-scoring chances, two of which resulted in assists for Emir Spahic and Karim Bellarabi. The woodwork only narrowly denied Calhanoglu from capping off his fine day out with a goal (all of which can be seen in the video above).
It is clear, then, that at only the tender age of 20, a wieldy right foot at set pieces and the ability to score proficiently, Hakan Calhanoglu is set to wreak havoc upon Bundesliga defenses this season.
