Liverpool star Steven Gerrard has tipped Jordan Henderson to eventually replace him as the club's captain, reports The Mirror.
Henderson, who is now the Reds' vice-captain, has enjoyed a fine 12-months at the Merseyside outfit after initially struggling to make an impression following his move form Sunderland in 2011.
Gerrard and Henderson have played side-by-side in the heart of the Liverpool team in recent time, and it appears that the 24-year-old, who is 10-years younger than the club's current captain, could eventually replace him as the leader of the side.
And Gerrard certainly expects him to succeed at the club, insisting that he already leads by example and is a 'top player'.
Speaking to reporters, the former England skipper said: “It’s very well deserved. It’s no surprise to me. I’m sure he will be the main man and club captain in a few years when I’ve gone.
“He epitomises everything a captain is. He works hard, both on and off the pitch, he’s well liked in the dressing room, he leads by example and let’s not forget, he’s a top player as well.”
Gerrard, of course, can't go on forever, but will be looking to ply his trade at Anfield for another couple of years yet. Henderson, then, still has time on his side to learn the role at Anfield, and will be desperate to eventually fill Gerrard's boots at the club.
Both players could be in action this weekend, with Liverpool set to take on West Ham United at Upton Park. The Reds will be desperate to secure all three points against Sam Allardyce's side after losing their second game of the domestic season against Aston Villa at Anfield last weekend.
Rodgers' side did, however, win their first Champions League game of the season against Ludogorets on Tuesday evening, and they will now be hoping to find their best form in the coming weeks.
The Reds will be hoping to go one better this term after ending in second place in the Premier League last time out, but they already have ground to make up on league leaders Chelsea after a slow start.
