It was definitely one of the quieter debates in the NFL - “Who is the best returner in NFL History?”
While many would be hard-pressed to name anyone before Deion Sanders, that has all changed now… one of the newer Atlanta Falcons and former Chicago Bear Devin Hester broke Sanders’ record for most return touchdowns in history last night.
Hester had made quite a case up until the groundbreaking game against Tampa Bay as he had scored 19 return TDs tying Sanders.
It solidifies the argument that many football fans have made believing that the speedster was already the greatest (I am one of those football fans.)
A Fast Career Through and Through
Hester had actually been a game breaking kick returner since high school and an excellent track star as well. He became widely known at the College Level as a member of the Miami Hurricanes, again as a lethal returner and speed option on offense.
Hester also became the first player in Miami Canes’ history to play on offense, defense, and special teams. He was a huge fan of Deion and earned nicknames such as, “Hurricane Hester” and “Anytime” which paid homage to Sanders’ alter ego “Prime Time.”
Interestingly enough, Devin met Deion while playing at Miami through teammate Ed Reed who (became one of the best safeties in the league and was drafted by Baltimore). Sanders and Hester seemed to click, and “Prime Time” began to mentor the young star. But who could have predicted that the “grasshopper” would surpass the “sensei”?
Apparently Deion did…
Reaction to Record Breaking
If Deion Sanders isn’t a fortune teller at this current time he may want to look into it… The former Falcon shutdown Corner said before the Thursday night that Hester would most likely break “someone’s record” during the Tampa game.
Sanders was of course referring to his own return record and boy was he right. Hester broke the record on a 62 yard return after which he hugged a security guard and met with Deion on the sidelines.
“Prime Time” then tweeted, “@D_Hest23 like I said is the BEST EVER!! #TRUTH.”
Whether you like it or not, Hester IS the best the league as ever seen as Deion so gracefully put it.
