New Hertha Berlin signing Salomon Kalou insists he has returned to full fitness and is raring to go ahead of the Blue and Whites Bundesliga away fixture against fellow league strugglers SC Freiburg this evening.
The Ivory Coast international who signed for Hertha Berlin from Ligue 1 side OSC Lille on the last day of August in a £1.58 million deal only made his debut for the Old Lady last Saturday, but was unable to cause an impact as the east German outfit lost 3-1 at home to Mainz.
The discouraging result means that Hertha Berlin are still without a win to their names at the start to the 2014-15 Bundesliga campaign, with the Blue and Whites having only secured one point from their last three games.
Freiburg test awaits
Jos Luhukay’s side travel on Friday evening to Freiburg, who themselves are looking to secure their first victory of the Bundesliga season, having also only secured one point from a possible nine.
Although the new Bundesliga campaign has only been up and running less than a month, the game has already being billed as a “must win” by both camps with Kalou adamant that he prepared for the task at hand, and will give his everything in order to win the game for his new employers.
He told Bild: “I am regaining my fitness. I think that I am fit enough to play against Freiburg. I will go out with the aim of giving 100%”
Kalou: We must secure three points
The former Chelsea striker also hinted that a win against Freiburg would change the whole complexion of the Bundesliga table, with Hertha able to knock Eintracht Frankfurt of tenth spot if they able to secure maximum points.
He went on to say: “We have a game that would change the complexion of the table if we won. We must look to secure three points.”
Having secured promotion back to the Bundesliga at the first attempt of trying in 2012, Luhukay guided the Old Lady to an impressive 11th place finish in the previous campaign, a feat which he is trying to better this time around.
However, after three Bundesliga fixtures it is obvious to suggest that the Olympistadion side do not look as potent as they were in the previous campaign, with critics hinting that the sale of striker Adrian Ramos to league rivals, Borussia Dortmund has taken the attacking edge out of the club.
Kalou under pressure to deliver
Although, Kalou who scored 34 goals in 80 appearances for Lille in every competition between 2012-2014 before his move to the German capital for less than £2 million is already being described as a tidy bit of business by the Blue and Whites.
All these things considered, Hertha Berlin are desperate that Kalou will toast the start of a successful scoring spree by opening his Bundesliga account with a goal against Freiburg, with Kalou adamant to do just so.
He said: “Hopefully I will be able to score my first goal for the club. That is my aim. I am here to help the team out and when I am able to score in Freiburg then that will be even better.”
