The summer transfer window is now but a distant memory for most fans, but those of Chelsea have been given something fresh to be excited about.
French sources are supposedly reporting that Jose Mourinho has submitted an offer for Marseille star Gianelli Imbula, who is rated at around £25 million.
The solid anchorman has been likened to former Arsenal star Patrick Vieira for his physically dominant displays in the middle of the park, and has attracted interest from Arsene Wenger as a result.
However, it would seem that Mourinho is looking to strike first blood in this particular transfer race, and the swift approach might be enough to hand him victory given that Imbula is reportedly up for sale.
The French midfielder has four years remaining on his contract at the Stade Velodrome but Marseille are said to be willing to cash in on him should they receive an offer which meets their estimations.
With Mourinho having already signed both Nemanja Matic and Francesc Fabregas since returning to Stamford Bridge last season he's made it clear that midfield is an area which he wants to get absolutely right. As a result Imbula could further strengthen his options, though whether or not the deal will be finalised prior to January remains to be seen.
Mourinho on Ronaldo
Elsewhere Mourinho has decided to put paid to sensational speculation suggesting Chelsea could pip Manchester United to the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, by confirming that he has no relationship with the Real Madrid forward.
Certain reports had claimed The Special One could try to steal Ronaldo if he becomes available, but the Portuguese boss appears to have rejected that notion entirely. The duo were expected to produce fireworks in Madrid when Mourinho took charge there, but somewhat failed to live up to the hype.
In an inevitable case of one club being too small to house two huge egos Ronaldo and Mourinho eventually clashed, before the latter left to return to Chelsea. Now at Stamford Bridge Mourinho is looking to ensure that the Blues don't witness another trophy-less season, having been unable to win any competition last term.
Ronaldo on the other hand lifted the Champions League with Real last season, and also signed a new five-year deal last September.
It’s also bad news for Blues fans with regards to the hunt for Raphael Varane, as the youngster has signed a new deal at the Santiago Bernabeu to rule out a departure. Both Mourinho and Louis van Gaal were interested but it seems that Chelsea’s wait for the long-term replacement for John Terry could be a protracted one.
