Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben believes that new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal will take Manchester United back to the Champions League on his first attempt.
The 20-time Premier League champions failed to qualify for Europe's premier cup competition after finishing a disappointing 7th under former manager David Moyes last season. United's absence from the tournament after 19 years was brought under intense media scrutiny this week as Europe's top clubs kicked-off their campaign.
But Arjen Robben, who knows Louis Van Gaal quite thoroughly from the 63-year-old's time with Bayern Munich and the Netherlands national team, believes that the Dutchman is the right person and will bring the glory days back to Old Trafford.
Talking in the aftermath of Bayern's 1-0 group stage win against Manchester City, he said: “I haven’t spoken to him recently, but I was very happy for him that he won the game against QPR. Hopefully now he can show that he will do very well, but he needs time.
“I know how it works. If you’re not winning, you get the pressure, but the management at United know what sort of coach they’ve got and I’m very confident he’ll be successful there."
“I’ve worked with Van Gaal at Bayern as well as with Holland, so I’ve known him for a very long time. He’s one of the few coaches, I think, who can make teams play better. He makes players better.
“United have some young, talented players and I have no doubts that he will do will at Old Trafford. He will get United back into the Champions League next season, where they belong. They’re such a big club and that’s where they belong.”
The summer spending
Manchester United splashed out over £150 million in the summer and will be hoping that the mammoth amount money spent on fresh faces will pay it's dividends.
Radamel Falcao, Angel Di Maria, Daley Blind, Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw were all purchased by Van Gaal, as he looks to ensure last season's woes were one-off occurrence.
