Manchester United and Liverpool have been dealt a blow in their chase for Ukrainian winger, as reports suggest the Premier League pair will miss out to Inter Milan in January.
According to The Mirror, Konoplyanka is set for a transfer in the winter transfer window as his club Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk look to cash in on him rather than lose him for free at the end of the season.
Brendan Rodgers has been tracking the progress of the 24-year-old for some time, while his counterpart at Old Trafford, Louis van Gaal, have also been credited with an interest this year.
Previous deal broke down
As the report says, Liverpool tried to sign Konoplyanka in the previous January transfer window, but the move to Anfield broke down at the last minute because his club decided not to sell.
Dnipro had tried to get the Ukraine international to sign a new contract in an attempt to strengthen their position for a sale, but he rejected the offer and set himself up for a free transfer next summer.
Rated at £18million by his club, Konoplyanka was also linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer, but the prospect of a substantial pay day as a free agent and Dnipro’s valuation meant any move in the summer transfer window unlikely.
Now both Premier League giants look as though they have lost a march on Inter Milan heading towards the window reopening.
United’s interest may have cooled somewhat following their extravagances during the summer, where they spent the best part of £150million to bring in the likes of Radamel Falcao on loan, Angel di maris for a British record £59.7million, Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw.
