Orica-GreenEdge finished in the silver medal position with defending champions Omega Pharma-Quick-Step crossing the line in third place.

Team Sky falls

Team Sky missed out on a medal by two seconds after finishing in fourth place but the team rode well to finish only 38 seconds behind BMC.

Going into the race Omega Pharma, BMC and Orica were the favourites and with Omega Pharma having time trial specialist Tony Martin in their squad many thought they would win the gold medal but it wasn't to be.

Both Sky and Omega Pharma suffered in the final sectors due to rain and tiredness meaning Orica and BMC could take advantage.

Tejay Van Garderen was one of the riders in BMC's squad and he admitted the team knew they were capable of winning the race.

Confidence

According to Sky Sports, Van Garderen said: “It feels incredible. The team was confident, but we were nervous coming into this. A couple of years ago, in 2012, we were two seconds off the win, so we have had that in the back of our minds for a couple of years now.

"We knew coming in that we had a strong team – it was just a matter of everything falling into place. We went out there, did our thing, stayed calm, and we delivered.”

Women's team time trial

Specialized-Lululemon powered to victory in the women's team time trial after posting a time of 43 minutes 33 seconds on the 36.1km course.

This is the third time in a row that the American team have won the World Championship team time trial.

The silver medal went to Orica-AIS with the bronze going to Astana BePink. Lizzie Armitstead's team Boels-Dolmans crossed the line fifth place.
