Tony Martin clear favourite to win time trial at World Championships

Published 1 Comments

With the UCI Road World Championships in full swing will anyone be able to beat Tony Martin in the individual time trial on Wednesday?

Martin is the current defending champion of the discipline and has won the gold medal every year since 2011.

With a record like Martin's it is easy to see why he is the clear favourite to win the time trial but is it possible there will be an upset?

Tony Martin disappointed with World Championship defeat

Main competitor

I think there could be. One man who could beat the German would be Sir Bradley Wiggins. The Briton comes into the race in good form after winning the individual time trial in the Tour of Britain and leading Team Sky to an impressive fourth place in the team time trial on Sunday.

Wiggins is more than capable of beating Martin but he will have to be on top form if he is going to challenge him.

Martin admitted after Sunday's race that he wasn't quite at his best and was hoping to be 100 percent on Wednesday but, if he isn't, Wiggins has a good chance of winning gold.

OPQS were very disappointed with their bronze medal in the team time trial and the Team Sky rider can take confidence from this as Martin may be tempted to push too hard because of the disappointment of Sunday.

This could also be the 2012 Tour de France winner's final Road World Championships if he decides to focus on the track and leave the road for good so Wiggins may push himself to the limit.

Top form

However the German has won seven individual time trials already this year showing why he is the best in the world at time trials.

I think Martin will be desperate to win gold after only coming away with bronze at the weekend and I can see him beating Wiggins by a considerable distance. Wiggins is good at the discipline and is a better all round cyclist but the OPQS rider specialises in this event and that will be the difference.

Another potentially winner of the individual time trial is Sylvain Chavanel. The Frenchman finished second to Wiggins in the Tour of Britain time trial by just eight seconds and on his day he has enough to challenge Martin.

The 35-year-old is the current French National time trial champion so it will be a good contest between these riders.

Result Prediction

1. Tony Martin

2. Bradley Wiggins

3. Sylvain Chavanel
