Manchester United and Arsenal could go head-to-head in the race to sign Aston Villa centre-half Ron Vlaar in the January transfer window, according to the Express.
It's been suggested Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is ready to take advantage of Vlaar's contract situation at Villa Park by making a move for him in the winter market.
Vlaar is out of contract at Villa at the end of the season and is yet to hold talks with the club's hierarchy about an extension to his current deal.
Manchester United troubles
It's not surprising that Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is interested in bringing the defender to the club after his side's disastrous start to the season. United have picked up just five points from their opening five league fixtures and shipped five goals at the King Power Stadium against Leicester City yesterday.
After losing the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra in the summer, United only landed Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw in the previous window, so are lacking experience in the back-line.
The likes of Tyler Blackett, Chris Smalling and Co. have been key members of the team so far this term, but United have been conceding far too many goals. Vlaar's presence, then, may well settle the defence as it goes in search of improvement.
Van Gaal, of course, has a strong relationship with the Premier League star, having worked with him for the Netherlands national team. The centre-half played a key role for the Dutch as they secured third place in the tournament.
However, Manchester United could have to battle Arsenal for the player's signature. It's been suggested that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is ready to bring the experienced defender to the Emirates in January following the sale of former club captain Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona.
With youngster Calum Chambers currently starring at right-back because of Mathieu Debuchy's injury, Arsenal only really have Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny starring in the centre of defence.
Vlaar, though, may struggle for opportunities if he moved to the Emirates, but may well be handed a key role under Van Gaal at the Theatre of Dreams.
