WWE superstar Roman Reigns, speaking from a hospital bed in Nashville, has explained in his own words just what caused his shock absence from WWE's huge Night of Champions pay-per-view Sunday night.

In a video which shows the stricken wrestler speaking n the hours following surgery Reigns tells his fans what led him to call 911, adding his own input on the WWE's hastily put together official statement.

Painful experience

As one of the WWE's rising stars Roman Reigns is no stranger to pain but, as you can tell from his explanation of how events unfolded over the weekend, there is a difference between the controlled pain of battling it out in a WWE ring and the abnormal pain felt when simply lying in bed.

"Yesterday I was here in Nashville promoting Night of Champions and my match against Seth Rollins," explains a clearly groggy Reigns.

"I was laying in bed and all of a sudden I felt a really sharp pain right below my belly button in my bladder region...Tried to get it out but it just kept getting worse so I ended up calling 911.

"They sent an ambulance and once I got to the hospital, the doctor said I had a hernia and I needed to go into emergency surgery and here I am now."

Roman Reigns' status

As described by the WWE in their statement in the run up to the Night of Champions, Roman Reigns is likely looking at a minimum of six weeks away from WWE action as he recuperates from a fairly major operation.

The WWE superstar has however been released from the Nashville hospital today (Monday) however, and he took to Twitter to reveal his delight at the progress:

"Finally headed home for some R&R!! My recliner is calling my name!! #Recovery #ASAP," wrote the rising star of the WWE on Monday afternoon alongside a picture of himself aboard a plane.

Vince McMahon and co will certainly be hoping his return occurs sooner rather than later with Reigns rumored to be in line for some huge storylines in the coming months.

Night of Champions

As they say in show business, 'the show must go on' and the WWE is no different with the hugely anticipated Night of Champions PPV going ahead without Roman Reigns.

The main headline from the night's event saw John Cena avenge his recent defeat to Brock Lesnar by overcoming his opponent in the main event.

There were also title bout victories for Sheamus and The Miz.
